Places to see in Venice

1-  The Grand Canal, Venice’s main waterway with its palaces and monuments (boat ACTV n. 1 or n. 2).

2-  Rialto Bridge -16th century. Nearby: S.Giacometo Church (supposedly the oldest church in Venice), the Erbaria (the venue of the fruits and vegetables market) and Campo de la Pescaria (where the fish market Is held). (boat ACTV n. 1 or 2 – stop: Rialto or Rialto Mercato).

3-  San Marco square and its treasures: Doge’s Palace (seat of the Venetian government), St. Mark’s Basilica (superb example of roman Byzantine style), St. Mark’s Bell Tower, The Clock Tower, The Bridge of Sighs (boat ACTV n. 1 or n. 2 – stop: S.Marco Vallaresso).

4-  Madonna della Salute Church: Longhena’s Baroque architectural masterpiece built to thank the Virgin Mary for stopping a terrible plague in 1630. (boat ACTV n. 1 – stop: Salute).

5-  S. Giorgio Maggiore Church facing SanMarco Basin: Palladio Renaissance architectural masterpiece. From the bell tower you will enjoy one of the best views of Venice and the Lagoon (boat ACTV n. 2 from S.Zaccaria or P.le Roma direction Giudecca).

6-  Murano island with The Veneto-Byzantine Church of SS. Maria and Donato and its mosaic floor, The Glass Museum containing a collection of antique and contemporary Venetian glass, the glass blowing factories (boat ACTV n. 42 or DM from P.le Roma or Ferrovia/boat ACTV n. 41 from S.Zaccaria / boat LN from Fondamenta Nuove).

7-  Accademia Galleries: complete outline of Venetian paintings from its origins to 1700. Nearby: S.Trovaso Church and Squero (a still operating gondola yard), the Gesuati Church with the ceiling frescoes by Tiepolo and Fondamenta delle Zattere (one of the most beautiful walks in the city with view on the Giudecca Canal). Boat ACTV n. 1 or n. 2 – stop: Accademia / Boat ACTV n. 2-51-61 – stop: Zattere.

8-  Ca’ Rezzonico - Museum of Venetian 18th Century in its sumptuous rooms it preserves many original furnishings and paintings (Boat ACTV n. 1 – stop: Ca’ Rezzonico).

9-  The gothic Church of Frari (with the famous painting of the Assumption by Titian) and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco (containing one of the finest pictorial cycles by Tintoretto). Nearby: Campo S.Polo.(Boat ACTV n. 1 or n. 2 – stop: S.Tomà).

10-Campo Ss. Giovanni e Paolo with its gothic church (the pantheon of the doges), the facade of the Scuola Grande di S.Marco (a masterpiece of the early Renaissance, now the Hospital) and the equestrian monument to the mercenary captain Colleoni by Verrocchio, (Boat ACTV n. 42 or 52 from P.le Roma-Ferrovia / boat ACTV n. 41 from S.Zaccaria – stop: Fondamenta Nuove).

- All the mentioned places (except Murano and S.Giorgio islands) can be reached both on foot and quickly by public boat (in this case a 12 hours or a 24 hour ACTV travel card is suggested; the islands are included).
